In addition to the ArtWalk artists studio tour, work from over 300 artists across a range of media will be on view during the weekend. ArtWalk will take place rain or shine. Events during ArtWalk include public art, participatory projects, artist receptions and artist talks, music, film screenings, readings, workshops, demonstrations, and much more.

Just steps away from Atlantic Avenue, enjoy our deck overlooking a hidden garden of 5000 square feet of outdoor space and relax with a beer as you view the beautiful modern abstract paintings of Ted Dimond and Michael Tharp at the newly opened de Castellane Gallery. This is the perfect respite during your ArtWalk tour to dine, drink, and view artwork. Community activist Melissa Ennen will team up with the SPARK drug prevention program at the Brooklyn High School of the Arts to create a rooftop painting at 388 Atlantic/The Commons. The SPARK Program provides drug and violence prevention programs to students in Brooklyn's public high schools. By actively engaging teens in meaningful supervised and structured projects -- activities like community service clubs, after-school recreational, academic skills building, and creative clubs, SPARK helps teenagers to develop the personal resources and skills they need to stay on a positive developmental trajectory.
At 388 Atlantic Avenue/The Commons - Melissa Ennen explains that she has dedicated the entire building to "... a new movement of citizens that are standing up to protect the things that belong to all of us. This is more than just an activist cause. The Commons is becoming a model for thinking differently about how we make decisions, and how we manage resources."
This project was conceived to celebrate the achievements of the SPARK program's high school students who have been hard at work with their volunteer tutors from NY Cares preparing for the SAT examination, engaged in community service projects with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, and leading their peers by sharing their positive pro-youth message throughout Brooklyn.
Jerry Otero, who coordinates the Brooklyn High School SPARK Program, says "... this event is our way of letting the kids know that we recognize their efforts and support them. It's amazing to be involved with people like Melissa who are coming together in the spirit of "SPARKing" an ongoing commitment to getting Brooklyn's youth what they need to succeed throughout the year." Lean more about the SPARK program at this event.
This large-scale, colorful work will be open to the public during ArtWalk for visitors to traverse and explore.

WE-ARE-FAMILIA is an extensive global network of emerging painters, illustrators, designers, film directors, photographers, architects, and musicians whom have come together to explore the powerful, complex ties which consciously and unconsciously touch all that we experience as humans. Spearheaded by Creative Director Jennifer Garcia, their primary ongoing project is a series of 25 one-of-a kind keepsake boxes showcasing original "mementos" contributed by its family of artists. Each keepsake box is custom built from recycled or surplus materials. Each contains a unique range of approximately 40 multimedia pieces based on the concept of family-from paintings, drawings, collages and prints, to hand-assembled fanzines, cut paper pop-ups, 8-track recordings and designer toys. Both strange and beautiful, nostalgic and contemporary, the keepsake boxes offer unexpected juxtapositions, a new and exotic understanding of ordinary things. Special events to be announced!

LAST DAY OF THE MYRTLE AVENUE EL: PHOTOGRAPHS BY THERESA KING
New York Transit Museum, Brooklyn Heights
At midnight on October 3, 1969 the last train on the Myrtle Avenue El departed Borough Hall. After 80 years of service the line would be demolished. Photographer Theresa King, who rode the train daily in her childhood, spent the day documenting the trains, stations, passengers, and views from the elevated platform. Forty years later this photo essay, shot in a single day, provides a glimpse into the past and preserves a memory of growing up in Brooklyn.

WHERE NEW YORK BEGAN: ARCHEOLOGY AT THE SOUTH FERRY TERMINAL
New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store at Grand Central Terminal
The new South Ferry subway station is enhancing New York's future and helping uncover its past. An area rich in city history, it has served as a military battery, fort, and barracks and was home to Native Americans, the Dutch, and British colonials who developed it as a center of city commerce. Before constructing the station an extensive archeological dig was conducted on the site, and two 18th century city landmarks - four sections of the Battery Wall and portions of Whitehall Slip - were uncovered, along with 50,000 artifacts. This exhibit will feature these exciting discoveries and reveal the stories they tell about New York life long ago.
