Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk06 to Showcase 100+ Established & Emerging Artists in Open Studios, Exhibits and Arts-Related Events - June 3 & 4, 2006

Third Annual Open Studio tour gives public rare glimpse into artist's workspace and creative process
New York City itself emerges as a theme in this year's ArtWalk

Brooklyn, New York -- May 15, 2006 -- On Saturday and Sunday, June 3 & 4, 2006, from 1-6 pm each day, a wide range of established and emerging artists will open their studios to the public as well as exhibit along more than one mile of Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue from Fourth Avenue to Hicks Street. Open Studios give the public a rare inside look at the artist's workspace and creative process while providing visitors an opportunity to speak directly with the artist. Simultaneously arts-related programming in the form of music, film, and public art will be held throughout the weekend. All ArtWalk06 events are free and open to the public.

An ArtWalk06 tour map provided along Atlantic Avenue and online, together with red flags, lead the way to various bodies of works, such as painting, sculpture, textile art, photography, digital media, watercolor, ceremics, and more, hosted by galleries, stores and restaurants on and around Atlantic Avenue running through the charming neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and downtown Brooklyn.

ArtWalk weekend draws both collectors, gallery and museum curators, as well as the general public, to view, and purchase, works by local and visiting artists who have shown at diverse galleries and museums internationally. Participating galleries, stores and restaurants along Atlantic Avenue will offer specials and host receptions and an array of artist-led events.

Axelle Fine Arts, with galleries in New Orleans, San Francisco, Boston, and New York's Soho, will open its print studio during ArtWalk06 offering the public the opportunity to see a range of print techniques and meet their master printer. NY Arts Magazine described this print studio as being in a "beautiful Art Deco building [where] they do high-end graphics producing editions for local art stars like Inka Essenhigh and Matthew Barney."

Chris Piazza, recently the focus of a New York Times article, returns to ArtWalk06, opening her Boerum Hill studio to the public to view her elaborate mixed-media sculptures and the makings of her newest work, Ghost of Change, which the New York Times said, "memorializes both her cultural heroes and the vanishing parts of New York."

Christian Mendoza, painter and muralist from Nicaragua, whose works draw from the experiences of his homeland and the influences of New York City and Miami, returns after a year of exhibits and public works in the US, San Juan and Tokyo.

Smith Georges will publicly display his 5' painting/collage, "A Tribute to 9/11 Heroes," which was seen on the front page of the New York Times as well as CBS TV.

Following their recent tour and exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cannonball Press' popular woodcut and print show returns to ArtWalk06 with a public workshop and demonstration.

Also of interest to all ages will be the "Looking at Art" workshop to be held on June 3rd by Brooklyn-based artist, Colette Taber, who will explore topics such as color and picture plane theories to encourage children and young adults to closer examine painting and sculpture for their second or even third layers.

Melanie Hope Greenberg, acclaimed children's book author-illustrator, will read from her books, "Down in the Subway," and "A City Is" -- both filled with vibrant images of subway travel, New York City neighborhoods and city life from a child's perspective.

In collaboration with ArtWalk06, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) will host its open studios tour and pier show featuring over 300 artists combined in the adjacent neighborhoods of Red Hook and Carroll Gardens -- making the weekend Brooklyn's biggest art event of the year.

In honor of ArtWalk06, the New York Transit Museum will hold children's workshops with a special 2-for-1 paid admission. Similarly, Micro Museum on Smith Street will hold the closing reception of their group show Circus Surreal 2006 featuring 43 artists from 20 states. Visitors with an ArtWalk06 tour map will receive a gift at the door with their $2 paid admission to this extravaganza.

The Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk06 credits its success to the collaborative efforts of both the public and private sector working to advance local economic development, increased awareness and support of the arts, and community programming.

Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk06 is produced by COlab Projects and the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (AALDC) with production support from the Atlantic Avenue Betterment Association (AABA).

ArtWallk is generously supported by sponsors Time-Warner and the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and a grant from Independence Community Foundation. This event is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts. In Kings County the Decentralization Program is administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).
